CBA Analysis – Round 13

  • Avatar photo

CBAs – Centre Bounce Attendances – is a statistic that measures the number of times a player is present at a centre bounce at the beginning of a quarter or following a goal. A player that has a high attendance rate at CBAs is around the footy more and (in some cases) in a more fantasy-friendly midfield role.

Analyse the CBAs from round 13 in our user-friendly table below – featuring advanced analytic tools to better measure the biggest changes, both seasonally and week-to-week – and check out my five risers and fallers to monitor in AFL Fantasy.

Risers

Toby Greene (6 CBAs; 19% attendance) | 89 AFL Fantasy

When you’re down at three-quarter time to a team unashamedly adopting “The Process” as their rebuild strategy, you better start shuffling magnets. In round 13, Leon Cameron did just that, injecting Toby Greene into centre bounces in the 4th. The polarizing GIANTS superstar had all six of his CBAs in the final quarter, as GWS erased a 28-point deficit to produce an unsatisfying, yet better than the alternative, draw. The 19% attendance for TFG was a season-high, having only notched CBAs in three other games thus far in 2021. The once upon a time prolific ball-winning midfielder had five disposals, three tackles, three inside 50s, and a centre clearance in the final stanza to go with 27 AFL Fantasy points in a welcome return to the role.

Jai Newcombe (16 CBAs; 64% attendance) | 87 AFL Fantasy

After biding his time in the VFL, it was time to kill for Jai “Duke” Newcombe. Exploding onto the big stage with a record-breaking 14 tackles on debut, the 19-year-old also put together an impressive fantasy output. Receiving the same amount of CBAs as Brownlow Medalist (and snouted AFL Fantasy Pig), Tom Mitchell, Duke had the equal-most centre clearances for the Hawks and managed 13 disposals to go with his immense tackle count. Fantasy scoring is certainly in Newcombe’s repertoire long-term, his numbers at Box Hill – 23 disposals, six marks, seven tackles and 104.8 fantasy points per game – suggest he should be a quality player right out the gates. This was no fluke for the Duke.

Jordan De Goey (19 CBAs; 83% attendance) | 106 AFL Fantasy

Branded Jordan De GOAT by Roy of the Traders following his return to form in recent weeks, the much-maligned Pie has been as-advertised in a prominent midfield role. De Goey has recorded more than 50% CBAs in each of his past three games, notching a season-high 83% attendance in round 13, for 32 disposals, 10 score involvements, six clearances, and, most importantly, a fantasy ton – in Bucks farewell game. It was the perfect game to have a huge performance, with Robert Harvey eagerly watching on in the coaches box, jotting “De Goey + Midfield = Good” in his notebook following the inspired win against the ladder-leading Demons.

Fallers

Shaun Higgins (0 CBAs; -33% round diff) | 46 AFL Fantasy

DANGER! DANGER! The return of Patrick Dangerfield (59% attendance) in round 13, and the imminent return of Cam Guthrie potentially as soon as round 14, looks to have shattered Shaun Higgins CBA dreams, and possibly, his fantasy output. The Dog-turned-Roo-turned-Cat shone in a forward-midfield role in recent weeks, attending 28% of centre bounces from rounds 8-11, averaging 99.5 AFL Fantasy points in that stretch. Don’t be too discouraged from Higgins’ poor game against the Power – the Cats, while they got the win, had a season-low 321 disposals, per Fantasy Freako. Your sell-high window for Higgins has passed, but the 33-year-old should still be a solid scorer in your forward line when the Cats return to their high possession brand of footy in upcoming weeks.

Hugh Greenwood (9 CBAs; -11% round diff) | 83 AFL Fantasy

This is Matt Rowell’s world, we just live in it. Unfortunately for Hugh Greenwood, he lives in it too. The former Crow may have to make way for the “quicker and younger” Gold Coast gun in the engine room, as he did in round 13. The return of the seven-game wonder shook up the SUNS midfield mix; Flanders (-30% round diff), Rankine (-28%), and Greenwood (-11%) bearing the brunt of the immediate impact. The SUNS CBA mix will be interesting to monitor over the coming weeks as coach Stuart Dew tries to find answers in yet another underwhelming season.

Meanwhile, Matt Rowell‘s (13 CBAs; 65% attendance) modest AFL return probably shouldn’t come as a shock to fantasy coaches – he’s 19, coming off a serious injury, and has played under ten games of AFL footy! But what most people don’t know, is that the lacklustre outing may actually be a tactic to stay in Dew’s best 22. Hear me out! This is a working theory. Do you remember a man who also used to rule the (fantasy) world, Brayden Fiorini? Well, he has almost certainly been warning Rowell not to dominate too much, too early. Once the SUNS disposals-leader and fifth-placed B&F finisher as a 22-year-old in 2019, Fiorini – currently averaging 32 disposals, seven marks, four tackles and 125 fantasy points in the VFL – has been rarely sighted at AFL level following a blistering start to his career. If Rowell doesn’t heed the warning and indeed returns to his exceptional 2020 form this season, don’t be surprised if you see him racking up huge numbers alongside Fiorini in the VFL by 2024. Tread carefully, Rowell. #FREEORINI
