Geelong presents an interesting mix of players for keeper league coaches to consider in 2025. From comeback stories like Bailey Smith to emerging talents like Toby Conway and Lawson Humphries, the Cats’ lineup offers opportunities for both immediate returns and long-term investments. Below, we analyse players who could make a significant impact for your draft and keeper league teams.
Undervalued Players
Bailey Smith
After missing the entire 2024 season due to an ACL injury, Bailey Smith is ready to make his mark with the Cats. Moving to Geelong and being entrusted with a prime midfield role sets him up for a massive comeback this season. He’s a strong candidate to be the number-one forward in fantasy this year, but his forward eligibility likely won’t last beyond 2025. However, Smith’s scoring potential and future prospects make him a must-have player regardless. Select him with confidence.
Sam De Koning
Sam De Koning’s fantasy relevance depends heavily on his role. If he’s stationed in defence, as Geelong’s structure usually dictates, his scoring will be limited. However, should Toby Conway suffer another injury, De Koning could step into the ruck. He’s proven capable of solid fantasy scores in this position, so consider him as a late-round pick for potential short-term gains.
Breakout Candidates
Lawson Humphries
Lawson Humphries made a strong impression after breaking into Geelong’s side midway through last season, especially during the finals. Operating off the halfback flank, Humphries combines speed, skill, and decision-making that make him a potential fantasy weapon. While Geelong’s system doesn’t always favour high-scoring defenders, the performances of players like Tom Stewart and Mitch Duncan in the past show it’s possible. I have a feeling Humphries might deliver quality over quantity, but he’s worth watching closely.
Toby Conway
He’s probably Geelong’s preferred ruckman and has flashed plenty of potential so far. Despite battling injuries last season, he averaged 75 points per game when he played. If Conway can stay fit and secure the primary ruck role, he’ll provide reliable scoring for your ruck position and could be a valuable addition to your team.
Oliver Dempsey
Oliver Dempsey’s breakout may have happened last season, but his scoring (73 avg.) left room for improvement. Now listed as a midfielder only, he’s less desireable in fantasy circles but Dempsey still has the class and poise to elevate his fantasy output. With Geelong’s history of productive outside players, Dempsey’s potential to average over 80 this year makes him a solid midfielder pick.
Stash Options
George Stevens
George Stevens is an exciting prospect for keeper league coaches. In his draft year, he averaged 99.5 points per game in the Talent League and 87 points in the U18 Championships. Last year, Stevens played primarily as a midfielder in the VFL, averaging 77 points per game, but he also has the versatility to excel in a halfback role. He’s a year or two away from cracking into Geelong’s senior side, but his long-term fantasy potential is immense.
Senior Players
Mitch Duncan
While Mitch Duncan’s best years are behind him, he still holds value for coaches chasing a flag. His season is likely to be interrupted by rests and potential injuries, but when fit, Duncan can produce strong scores. Draft him as a late-round option for short-term gains if you’re in contention this year.
