Team Analysis 2022 – Hawthorn

The Hawks have a plethora of exciting youngsters on their list and many of them are incredibly tantalising Keeper League prospects.

Check out who is on Kaes’ radar in 2022.

Take a listen to our latest podcast: Pre-season 2022: Hawthorn, Melbourne and North Melbourne

Dylan Moore

I’m a big fan of Dylan Moore and it’s a genuine travesty he didn’t make the Under 22 Best 22 last year..

His season last year in a bad side was very good.

He averaged 15 touches, 3 tackles and kicked 27 snags. That’s the same amount of goals as Eddie Betts, more than Connor Rozee, Jordan DeGoey or Lachie Schultz.

Moore was the 50th best forward last season  with an average of 70.4 and was the 16th best forward in the Last 5 games where he averaged 85.7.

He only scored less than 60 points in 6 out of his 20 games, which for a small forward is pretty good.

In a poor side, he only had only had 4 goalless games, which shows he regularly hits the scoreboard.

Moore loves the contested footy and is happy to go and find it himself , plus he loves to lay tackles.

There’s more to him than your normal small forward. I don’t want to say he’s tracking towards Toby Greene style scoring but he has more Fantasy tricks than a Charlie Cameron or a Dan Butler.

Tough to hold in a keeper league but he’s one I’m keen to draft as my F4/5 this season.

Will Day

I’m incredibly high on this youngster.

Day has had a bit of a delayed pre-season but he’s up and running now and should be cherry ripe for 2022.

He averaged 69 from 5 games last season, which included a couple of real eye-catchers including a 28 touch, 103 points against Essendon and a 29 touch, 88 point game against the Giants.

Day averaged 74.5 BCV the year prior and despite not winning as much footy as he did last year, was super consistent all year long.

While he has back status this year, I really see him playing on the wing.

This means it is likely he will lose back status come 2023, but that doesn’t concern me one bit as I think he’s a career fantasy player. He has plenty of class, uses the ball beautifully and you just know the Hawks want it in his hands.

If he comes into the year fit and firing, he’s a massive contender for a big third-year breakout

Ned Reeves v Max Lynch

There is a genuine fight on for who is the next in line as the Hawks #1 ruckman.

I think you have to assume McEvoy is still their #1 but with no more Jono Ceglar, it’s between Reeves and Lynch for that second ruck position.

Looking back on their 2021 Stats

Reeves

VFL – 8 games: Averaged 11 touches, 31 HO’s and 76 points.

While he had two tonnes, he also had a few quiet games.

AFL – 5 games: averaged 10 touches, 26 HO’s and 69 points.

His best game was against a ruckless Suns lineup where he had 35 HO’s and 81 points.

Lynch

VFL – 7 games: averaged 13 touches, 3 tackles, 32 HO’s and 91 points

He scored 3 tonnes and his lowest score of the season was only a 70.

AFL – 2 game: averaged 11 touches, 20 HO’s and 61 points.

His two AFL games were against the Dees & Crows, which are tough assignments for a young ruck.

I have Lynch ahead of Reeves at this stage. Reeves definitely showed a bit last year at the Hawks but Lynch looks just a bit more well rounded and a bit more likely up forward if in tandem with McEvoy this year.

Will be interesting to monitor this battle over the preseason!

Jack Gunston

Disregard Gunstall at your own costs!

He missed most of last year with a bulging disc which just sounds bloody horrible.

Played the one game for 31 points.

He had the crook back before the Round 7 game and after it, went in for more surgery.

If he’s fit he could be the draft sleeper of the year!

Looking back on his previous season averages he’s gone at 85, 87, 76 and 76 (BCV)

On his worst averaging year of 76, that would still have him as a top 30 forward based off last year’s numbers!

Only 30, he’s a 30-40 goal a year forward and is easily still in Hawks B22.

Coaches will be put off by his older age and recent injury history but he may very well slide and someone will get themselves an F3 for the price of a packet of chips.

Tom Phillips

Are Fantasy coaches going to forgive Phillips in 2022?

Phillips averaged a coach killing 73 last year after basically every pundit (us included) expected big things as a CF DPP.

He amazingly only produced 1 tonne for the year which was a 104 against his old side.

Back in 2018 and 2019, he averaged 95 and 90 respectively, along with 26 and 24 touches in those years.

Last year his disposal numbers dropped to only 18.5 per game.

Most other things including, tackles, marks and goal-scoring were very similar. He just was not getting those extra 5-7 touches he had been in the years prior.

I think he is very much worth a look in 2022. There’s a new coach at the Hawks so anything can happen.

I firmly believe he has the wing role all locked up and I am not concerned about his spot in the side

Many coaches will discard him after losing DPP status but realistically the addition last year was generous anyway.

I think there is a genuine upside. He’ll be into his 2nd year at his new club and hopefully more settled.

While I probably think he’s a touch risky to be a keeper in most sides, I do think he’s worth looking at early on in a keeper redraft.

Hawks Defenders

Hawks defenders look like fools gold to me this year. Yes a lot of them can score well but honestly, there are way too many mouths to feedback there this year. I’ll run through their backline and give you an assessment of where they are at.

Hardwick – With a fully fit defence, Hardwick will return to his old lockdown ways and become less fantasy-relevant after a great 2021.

Frost – Not fantasy relevant at all but someone needs to play full back and be defensive.

Impey – Lit up parts of the season last year and was pivotal in providing run and dash from defence. Backing him in for another good year.

Jiath – Will continue to be that attacking half-back he was last year. He will continue to score well as he’s best when he attacks as he’s not a natural lockdown defender

Sicily – The days of Sicily being a top Fantasy scorer are over. He will take on more of a Steven May role and become one of the key lockdown defenders.

Scrimshaw – Will be solid once again but I think his Fantasy scoring won’t improve much on what he delivered last year.

Bramble – Unfortunately, loses his spot in that backline and Hartigan is there as defensive cover.

Long story short, in a startup – I’d be avoiding Hawks defenders for now. There is too much risk back there for now. In an established league, I’d be shopping players like Hardwick and Sicily around.
