AFLW Fantasy Scale of Hardness

You have seen the popular red and green coloured table on DT Talk and The Traders AFL Fantasy podcast, so we thought we’d apply a similar concept to the women’s game to help coaches pick players based on matchups.

As AFLW Fantasy enthusiasts, we know that fantasy footy isn’t just about picking your favourite players. It’s a strategic game of matchups, statistics, and predictions. That’s where the AFLW Fantasy Coach’s Scale of Hardness Table comes into play. If you’ve ever wondered how to evaluate and categorize player matchups effectively, this tool is your secret weapon.

In this blog post, I’ll break down how the scale of hardness is calculated and show you how to use it to your advantage in AFLW Fantasy.

Here’s how it works:

Step 1: Data Collection

To begin, we gather data on how every player at each position has performed against their opponents over the past three weeks.

Step 2: Differential Calculation

We then compare each player’s recent AFLW Fantasy performance to their season-long average to determine whether they have scored better or worse against their opponents. This step provides us with valuable insights into which teams allow players to score above or below their season-long average when facing them.

Step 3: Team Averaging

Now, we take it a step further and calculate the average differential for all players on a team versus their opponent. This provides us with an overall view of how well the teams perform against their opponents compared to their season-long averages.

Step 4: Matchup Categorization

The magic happens here. Based on the opponent’s average differential, we categorize matchups into five distinct levels:

  • VERY EASY: Opponents that have been giving up an average of at least +8 points above a player’s usual score. These matchups are golden opportunities for fantasy points.
  • EASY: Teams that concede between +4 and +7 points above a player’s average. Expect good performances here.
  • NEUTRAL: The balance zone, with differentials ranging from -3 to +3. Here, it’s a level playing field.
  • HARD: Teams that hold players to scores 4 to 7 points below their season averages. Players may find it tough in these matchups.
  • VERY HARD: The most challenging opponents, allowing players to score at least 8 points below their season averages. These matchups can be brutal.

Why It Matters

The Scale of Hardness Table is your strategic playbook. It helps you make data-driven decisions when selecting your fantasy AFLW lineup or making trades. As a coach, you can prioritize players with favourable matchups and be cautious with those facing tough opposition. This system enhances your ability to strategize effectively and elevate your fantasy game.

In Conclusion

AFLW Fantasy is a game of strategy, and the Scale of Hardness Table is your trusted ally. By using this tool, you can gain a competitive edge over your opponents. It’s all about understanding the matchups, evaluating performance differentials, and making informed decisions. So, next time you’re setting your lineup, consult the Scale of Hardness Table and watch your fantasy team thrive in the face of stiff competition.
