CBAs Analysis: Round 15, 2023 – AFL Fantasy

See who the winners and losers were in the CBAs over the weekend.

CBAs – Centre Bounce Attendances – is a statistic that measures the number of times a player is present at a centre bounce at the beginning of a quarter or following a goal. A player that has a high attendance rate at CBAs is around the footy more and (in some cases) in a more fantasy-friendly midfield role.

Analyse the CBAs from the football weekend in our user-friendly tables in our premium resources section – featuring advanced analytical tools to better measure the most significant changes, seasonally and week-to-week.

James Rowbottom

He’s an up and coming midfielder starting to break out, and there is no better fantasy indicator than a score of 129 in Round 15. Rowbottom backed up a 104 in Round 14 with a season high 129 from 27 disposals and 13 tackles! He has more than doubled his possession points at stoppages and has also increased his tackles to become second in the competition.

Will Day

Will Day has enjoyed a breakout season in the midfield and has been well involved at the centre bounce. This season, Day has attended 63% of CBAs and had a season high 82.6% in Round 15. It was a rise on his numbers before the bye – averaging just 52.2% in Rounds 12 and 13. Day scored 116 fantasy points from 29 disposals.

While it was a season-high figure, Will Day’s role was very different to what the CBA numbers suggest. In the absence of James Sicily, Day played as a loose defender, taking 9 marks and 2 kick-ins. His stoppage points were well down:

Ben Hobbs

Darcy Parish returned in Round 15 and many owners were worried about Hobbs’ scoring prospects going forward. Yet, Hobbs tonned up for the first time this season with a 105. Midfield time wasn’t obvious with just 26% CBAs but Hobbs is not a reliant player on scoring from stoppages. I flagged this when Parish went down; the midfield time is just a bonus for a great accumulator like Hobbs. In Round 15, Hobbs scored a season high 75 points from ball transition (turnover and kick-ins), with just 30 from stoppages.

Sam Flanders

Flanders returned to the Suns team in Round 15, and had a decent run in the midfield. He attended 43.5% (10/23) of centre bounces with 5 of those in the final quarter. After dominating in the VFL the week prior, Flanders had an impact at AFL level, getting well involved for 94 fantasy points.

With Touk Miller likely to return in the next fortnight, it is hard to see Flanders having any sort of role security in a consistent Suns midfield. His scoring wasn’t heavily influenced by centre bounce attendances however, so if he can maintain his spot he could still be one to consider on field this season. Brayden Fiorini also got a big CBA boost for 39 stoppage points.

Jade Gresham

It’s far from an obvious play, but could you pick up Gresham as a free agent this week against the Eagles? In the last four games, Gresham has attended 49% of centre bounces and his stoppage output has increased compared to the start of the year. Since Round 11, Gresham’s stoppage points per game has been 26.3, almost double his 14.4 per game prior. He has averaged just 68.2 points per game this season but he plays the Eagles this week. Keep an eye on whether Seb Ross returns to the team.
