CBAs Analysis: Round 18, 2023 – AFL Fantasy

See who the winners and losers were in the CBAs over the weekend.

CBAs – Centre Bounce Attendances – is a statistic that measures the number of times a player is present at a centre bounce at the beginning of a quarter or following a goal. A player that has a high attendance rate at CBAs is around the footy more and (in some cases) in a more fantasy-friendly midfield role.

Analyse the CBAs from the football weekend in our user-friendly tables in our premium resources section – featuring advanced analytical tools to better measure the most significant changes, seasonally and week-to-week.

Max Gawn

10 coaches votes and Round 19’s highest scorer clearly enjoyed the solo ruck mantle. Gawn scored 162 fantasy points in Round 19, his career high! This season Gawn has averaged 53% centre bounce attendance. In full matches with Brodie Grundy, it has been a 52-48 CBA percentage split in favour of Gawn. However, in Round 19 with Grundy left out, Gawn attended 91% CBAs.

As a ruckman, Gawn obviously scores most of his points at stoppages. He took this to another level with 39 hitouts plus a massive 73 additional stoppage points from disposals and tackles. 112 total points from stoppages is the highest match total of any player this season.

Neil Erasmus

Erasmus scored his first ton of his career with a team high 115 fantasy points in Round 18. It was a sensational stat line compiling 26 disposals and 10 tackles. Erasmus has struggled to be in Fremantle’s best team in 2023, however he has now played 5 consecutive matches. Out of the substitute ‘vest’, we are starting to see Erasmus at his best.

Erasmus hasn’t been used at many centre bounces this season, attending just 17.0% of possible centre bounces over the last five weeks. He had 6 of 31 CBAs in Round 19, with half of those in the final quarter. His scoring breakdown was more promising though, as Erasmus scored a huge 60 fantasy points from stoppages despite a low CBA percentage.

Taylor Adams

Adams has been pushed out of the main midfield mix in 2023 with the offseason addition of Tom Mitchell. Collingwood’s midfield depth has increased and it has seen Adams drop from 65% CBAs in 2022 to just 37% this season. However, in Round 18, Adams scored a season high 125 fantasy points against the Dockers. He did his from 48.4% CBAs, and scored 73 points from stoppages.

The flag is the management of Tom Mitchell as the starting substitute but it was another midfielder in Pendlebury that was substituted out. Adams has MID/FWD status in fantasy which very accurately matches his in-game role, so expect scoring inconsistency.

George Hewett

I’ve written about George Hewett before as he is a very reliant player on CBAs for scoring well in fantasy. It’s been a big regression in 2023 averaging just 65.2 points per game after 98.5 in 2022. Hewett had spent 4 games as the substitute before playing a full game in Round 18. He scored a modest 74 points from 53.1% CBAs.

Matthew Kennedy was used more in centre bounces throughout the middle of the season. Kennedy was ruled out for over a month due to injury and provided a position for Hewett in the team again. He should be on your waivers radar with a low season average but a great next 3 matchups against the Eagles, Pies and Saints.

Tom Atkins

Back-to-back 120s has Tom Atkins back in draft teams everywhere. It was a modest start to the year for Atkins with just one score over 90 points but he has turned it around in Rounds 17 & 18. His CBA numbers have remained steady, sitting at 69% for the season, but his stoppage impact has improved dramatically from a fantasy perspective:
