CBAs Analysis: Round 2, 2023 – AFL Fantasy

See who the winners and losers were in the CBAs over the weekend.

CBAs – Centre Bounce Attendances – is a statistic that measures the number of times a player is present at a centre bounce at the beginning of a quarter or following a goal. A player that has a high attendance rate at CBAs is around the footy more and (in some cases) in a more fantasy-friendly midfield role.

Analyse the CBAs from the football weekend in our user-friendly tables in our premium resources section – featuring advanced analytical tools to better measure the most significant changes, seasonally and week-to-week.

Will Setterfield

The fantasy-hype man of the week, Setterfield has enjoyed a team high 82.1% CBAs to be the 3rd highest averaging player in 2023. Coming off a 130 with 90% CBAs, we see how much better his role is at the Bombers. 90% CBAs is a career high (where known) and so is the score of 130!

It appears Brad Scott has settled on a consistent midfield group – Merrett, Parish, Shiel and Setterfield, all good enough to be in there consistently. Is it possible that with the introduction of other players intermittently as the season progresses that Setterfield is the one to slide out? At the moment, those of you who drafted Setterfield should enjoy the ride.

Will Day

A big increase last week for Will Day, up from 25.8% CBAs in R1 to 62.5% in R2. Consecutive scores in the 90s means that CBAs obviously aren’t everything, but they do help.

Expect him to get dual-position status this season. But his CBAs could be inconsistent with a lot of young talent at the lower-ladder Hawks. Last season, Hawthorn had 22 players rotate through CBAs, 3rd most in the league. Will Sam Mitchell continue to experiment?

Will Brodie

3x Will in one article? I guess so. Brodie was the biggest breakout player of 2022, moving to the inside midfield role at the Dockers. Averaging 68% CBAs, he averaged 95.4 points per game. Many draft coaches were keen on Brodie to push the 100 average, especially after he pumped out a 116 in the preseason.

However, his CBA numbers have dropped with the offseason arrival of Jaeger O’Meara. Brodie has attended just 44% of Fremantle’s CBAs in 2023. A R2 score of 60 was his lowest for the Dockers, and coincidentally was his lowest CBA% game too at just 32%. Sam Switkowski got a few, as did James Aish.

Connor Rozee

A fantasy-points smashing (and on the scoreboard too) in R2 for Port Adelaide should leave owners grateful that Rozee still reached an 81. This is the floor many coaches were hoping for, compared to some 50s and 60s last season. His CBAs dropped from 83% to 50% as many players filtered through during the game.

Most of Rozee’s CBAs came when the game was alive, while Boak had Port’s most in the final quarter. I wouldn’t be too worried about a drop in this circumstance. This match was the best indication of Rozee’s floor, and he still scored 81.

Luke Beveridge

This should come as no surprise to anyone watching the Bulldogs game…

Caleb Daniel – as seen in the preseason, Daniel took the CBAs left behind by Treloar, and also took some from the Bulldogs main midfield group. Particularly in the 2nd half.

Jack Macrae – 18% of Macrae’s disposals in 2022 were at the centre-bounce (19% in 2021). A player like Macrae simply can’t be left out of CBAs if he is to score highly in Fantasy.
