CBAs Analysis: Round 23, 2023 – AFL Fantasy

See who the winners and losers were in the CBAs over the weekend.

CBAs – Centre Bounce Attendances – is a statistic that measures the number of times a player is present at a centre bounce at the beginning of a quarter or following a goal. A player that has a high attendance rate at CBAs is around the footy more and (in some cases) in a more fantasy-friendly midfield role.

Analyse the CBAs from the football weekend in our user-friendly tables in our premium resources section – featuring advanced analytical tools to better measure the most significant changes, seasonally and week-to-week.

Sam Docherty

When George Hewett and Matthew Kennedy got injured it opened up a spot for Sam Docherty in the midfield.

After attending less than 1% of the centre bounces up to round 21, Doc went to 81.5% of the centre bounces for Carlton during the final two rounds of the season. This led to some massive fantasy scores to finish off the year (123 and 137 in the last two rounds).

Do I see him continuing as a midfielder next season? Not with a full-strength midfield.

But it’s promising to see that Doc can play in the guts with ease and should be the first point of call if a midfielder goes down in future, making him an absolute premium option in defence for next season.

Josh Daicos

I mentioned this on the podcast last week, but Josh Daicos lifted his centre bounce attendance rate in the back end of the season.

Primarily playing as a winger for the first half of the year, we didn’t see Josh Daicos on the inside too often. In fact, up to we didn’t see Daicos at a single centre bounce until round 18. From that point onwards, he had an attendance rate of 32.3%.

Looking at how this affected his fantasy scoring, he boosted his scoring by 12.1 points per game on average over the final six games of the season.

There appeared to be a changing of the guard in Collingwood’s midfield this season, and it looks like Josh Daicos could find a place in there going forward.

Adam Treloar

After seemingly finding a home in defence over the past few weeks, Treloar returned to the midfield for the Western Bulldogs in their win over Hawthorn.

Treloar hadn’t been to a centre bounce since round 16, but this week he went to 29% of them to finish off the year.

This obviously had an effect on his scoring as Treloar put up his first 100+ score in over a month.

In terms of Treloar’s best position, it’s obvious his fantasy scoring is the best in the midfield but he would be a handy addition to most sides as a defender next season, so let’s hope this midfield run doesn’t continue too deep into the finals.

Jonathon Ceglar

It seems obvious that a ruckman will attend centre bounces, so I just want to use this space to talk about the potential of this guy.

When Ceglar went to Geelong, I was certain he’d be the number one ruck in 2022 but injury hampered him this year and he only got to play two games.

Over the years we’ve seen Rhys Stanley in and out of the side on form. We’ve also seen Blicavs used often in the ruck but he can play a multitude of roles, so it’s beneficial for Geelong to play another ruck to free him up.

So the point of this piece is to ensure we watch Ceglar closely over the finals series if he plays. If he can cement his place as the number one ruck for next season, he might be a handy pick-up considering he’ll likely be available in some drafts.

If you’re in need of a ruckman for a season or two whilst another on your list develops, he could be handy.
