CBAs Analysis: Round 6, 2023 – AFL Fantasy

See who the winners and losers were in the CBAs over the weekend.

CBAs – Centre Bounce Attendances – is a statistic that measures the number of times a player is present at a centre bounce at the beginning of a quarter or following a goal. A player that has a high attendance rate at CBAs is around the footy more and (in some cases) in a more fantasy-friendly midfield role.

Analyse the CBAs from the football weekend in our user-friendly tables in our premium resources section – featuring advanced analytical tools to better measure the most significant changes, seasonally and week-to-week.

Brayden Fiorini

The fantasy-hype man of the week, Fiorini is back as a potential scorer in 2023. A long-term injury to star midfielder Touk Miller leaves a big opportunity in the Gold Coast midfield group. Fiorini is a promising replacement based on 2023 numbers. He has attended 50% and 44% of centre-bounces over the last two games – the next in line behind Rowell and Anderson.

We look back to the end to 2021, where Fiorini scored 7x 100+ scores in a row between Rounds 16 and 22. He was the #2 for CBAs at the Suns over this period and averaged 60.9% per game. Now we just need him to get into the midfield again!

Sam Walsh

It has been a massive return for Sam Walsh in 2023 after a back injury caused him to miss the start of the season. While St Kilda are an incredibly easy opponent for MIDs, Walsh scored a game-high 131 points. He will be a popular player in fantasy circles this week, and attending 83% of centre-bounces only makes him more popular.

Carlton’s midfield mix has been far from consistent in 2023. Five midfielders are averaging 50%+ CBAs so far. Cripps is clearly always there, but the other four have experienced both high and low CBA games. Matthew Kennedy’s move to the backline helps Walsh, and Ed Curnow attended zero before being subbed out. A four-man midfield of Cripps, Walsh, Hewett and Cerra is more appealing for their centre-bounce prospects.

James Rowbottom

Over the last three games, Rowbottom has been the #1 midfielder at the Swans for centre-bounces, attending 74.4% since Round 4. He attended a team-high 79%, but the Swans were smashed by the Cats – so make of that what you will. It has boosted his scoring slightly, averaging 78.7 in his last three.

With Callum Mills now a “key defender”, Rowbottom could be a good stash for your benches for now. The Swans face a few tough opponents over the next few weeks, so I’ll be watching for the role in those games more than the points. Then he could go big against some easier matchups!

Adam Treloar

The Bulldogs have actually had a consistent centre-bounce breakdown over the last few weeks (touch wood). The main beneficiary of this has been Adam Treloar. Once an elite fantasy midfielder at the Pies, his unpredictable role under Luke Beveridge has lead to unpredictable scoring.

Treloar has attended 80.2% of centre bounces in the last month and has had consecutive games of 35 disposals. It’s a nice boost for Treloar after averaging just 37%/34% CBAs in 2022/2021 respectively. Bailey Smith is likely to return this week so I am intrigued to see if he returns in the centre-bounce.

Harry Perryman

Perryman is back from injury and went straight into the midfield in the absence of Tom Green. He attended 79% of centre bounces and scored 79 points. A great option off the waivers if he is available, particularly with a low average next to his name. Perryman attended 90.4% of centre-bounces in the last three games of 2022, pushing Josh Kelly out of the midfield.

Tom Green will return this week, will we see the Giants move from a consistent three player midfield to a four-man rotation? If they do, Perryman will be worth picking up.
