CBAs Analysis: Round 9, 2023 – AFL Fantasy

See who the winners and losers were in the CBAs over the weekend.

CBAs – Centre Bounce Attendances – is a statistic that measures the number of times a player is present at a centre bounce at the beginning of a quarter or following a goal. A player that has a high attendance rate at CBAs is around the footy more and (in some cases) in a more fantasy-friendly midfield role.

Analyse the CBAs from the football weekend in our user-friendly tables in our premium resources section – featuring advanced analytical tools to better measure the most significant changes, seasonally and week-to-week.

Matthew Kennedy

Kennedy found his way into the selected 22 and got rid of the sub vest in Round 9. After two weeks of minimal game time with midfield dominance, he finally got the chance to deliver in a full game.

Many fantasy coaches would be attracted by his centre-bounce bump from 21% in R8 to 57% in R9, but it was actually his around-the-ground stoppage points that gave him the boost. He scored 9 fantasy points from centre bounces in both weeks, but here’s where the rest of his 95 points came from:

Rory Sloane

Adelaide have a minimal centre-bounce mix behind Laird and Dawson. Sam Berry and Matt Crouch are playing in the SANFL which means the third CBA slot is left to others. Josh Rachele’s midfield time has dropped over the last few weeks and Sloane has attended over half of centre-bounces in the last two weeks.

Sloane missed most of 2022 through injury and has found some form, not going under 80 fantasy points since Round 4. If he’s available on your waivers he is a solid pick for your midfield. At least until the Crows figure out who is going to be in their midfield more permanently…

Josh Kelly

Josh Kelly’s CBAs dropped from 74% last week to 45% as Harry Perryman moved to the inside more. Even substitute Callan Ward attended 6 of the 7 final-quarter CBAs! If you are an owner of Kelly it’s not the move you want to see after he has averaged 74% for the season prior to Round 9.

However, his centre-bounce numbers didn’t really affect him as his CBA impact was higher. He scored more points at centre-bounces this week. While his stoppage numbers were down, he scored very well from transition off Collingwood turnovers, particularly in the last quarter. A great fantasy player you can trust!

North Melbourne

Luke Davies-Uniacke has lead North Melbourne for centre-bounce-attendances this season and has been ruled out for 3-5 weeks. Who can we expect to take over the midfield role? Hugh Greenwood was the centre-bounce replacement for Ben Cunnington so I would expect him to remain in there.

Cam Zurhaar attended 5 of his 9 CBAs in the final quarter when LDU went down. Tom Powell was the replacement when Simpkin was injured. Or could we see draftee George Wardlaw be put straight into the action? There are plenty of options so it might be best to watch for a week.

Tanner Bruhn

It hasn’t quite reflected in his fantasy output yet, but Tanner Bruhn is an elite centre-bounce midfielder. He scored 41 of his 69 points against the Tigers from stoppage situations. 19 points from centre-bounces alone exclusively set his season best in that stat.

However, Bruhn has only attended 55%, 59% and 55% CBAs over the last three weeks. While it is promising that he is back in there, he needs more opportunity going forward if he wants to score 80s. A great one to stash and hold onto for years to come.
