Draftee AFL Fantasy Analysis 2022 – Part 2

AFL Fantasy Draftee Header

The draft is less than a week away, so let’s keep looking at the AFL Fantasy scores and the potential of this year’s draft class.

Last week we looked at the guys who are likely to go at the pointy end of the draft. These players get a lot of press, and rightly so. But they’re not always the best prospects in terms of AFL Fantasy scoring. Often the better fantasy scorers will be taken a lot later in the draft.

In this article, we’ll take a look at the players who are likely to appear a little later than the players listed last week and how they performed in 2022 from an AFL Fantasy perspective.

Jhye Clark

Clark was a consistent performer at the underage level in 2022.

This tough inside midfielder is an absolute workhorse with a giant tank who gives his all to win the football. He also has a good set of hands and can take a decent grab for a midfielder standing at only 181cm tall.

In terms of fantasy, he started the year slowly but has been a consistent performer since round 5 of the NAB League. He put up six scores of 100+ in 2022, his best performance being 130 AFL Fantasy points in the NAB League Wildcard game, racking up 21 kicks, 6 handballs, 8 marks, and 6 tackles.

A lot depends on where he lands in terms of his 2023 fantasy potential, but if he can get a game early he could have an immediate impact.

Matteus Phillipou

AFL Fantasy Average:

817.510.56.65.102.211.51123.1

This 192cm midfielder shows footy smarts and possesses clean skills with the football in hand. He also can play forward using his athleticism and good aerial skills to pose a threat around goals.

He played 8 games in the SANFL U18s for Woodville West Torrens and had the second-highest AFL Fantasy average in the competition behind North Adelaide’s Billy Dowling. He went at 123.1 points per game with two scores of over 150 and 6 scores of over 100. He also played three SANFL Reserves games for an average of 62.3 points.

As a midfielder/forward with a high fantasy ceiling, he should be on your radar.

Jakob Ryan

AFL Fantasy Average:

816.611.86.83.200.80.90.11105.5

You’ll usually find Jakob Ryan on a half-back flank, but he also can play on a wing or a half-forward flank.

He’s a versatile player who manages to find a lot of the footy on the outside. He has a decent leg and a good set of hands making himself a threat to opposition teams in whatever position he finds himself in.

In terms of fantasy, he averaged 105.5 points in the SANFL Under 18s, averaging 28 disposals per game. His form was good enough to earn him selection in the Glenelg Reserves side, where he averaged 86.5 points from 2 games.

He also had a massive finals series for Glenelg U18s, scoring 115 in the Grand Final, and 116 in the Preliminary Final proving that he likes the big stage.

Edward Allan

AFL Fantasy Average:

Edward Allan (the son of former Hawk and Docker, Ben) appears most likely to develop into a midfielder despite playing key positions at either end of the ground in the past.

He’s a taller type who possesses sharp skills and mobility, leading him to spend time in the midfield last season.

Despite only playing six games in 2022 across WAFL Colts and state level due to a back injury, his performances have been enough to attract AFL clubs’ attention.

He put up three 100+ scores in WAFL Colts last season, with his best performance coming in round 18 against Peel Thunder amassing 31 disposals, 9 marks, 5 tackles, and 129 AFL Fantasy points.

He’s not one of the biggest names in the draft, but if he gets a game there’s definitely some potential here.

Adam D’Aloia was named MVP for South Australis at the Under-18 Championships.

Adam D’Aloia

AFL Fantasy Average:

D’Aloia has one of the biggest AFL Fantasy averages of the 2022 draft pool.

He’s a strong, contested ball winner, who does his best work at the stoppages. He also possesses a large tank that allows him to get up and down the ground.

He dominated the under-18s early in the season to average 114 AFL Fantasy points from 8 games and then was called up to the reserves where he was one of Woodville West Torrens’ best players in the second half of the season. He managed to put up three 100+ scores from 7 games in the reserves and went on to average 93.7 AFL Fantasy points at this level.

He was named MVP South Australian award during the Under 18 Championships.

If he can find his way onto a list and gets a chance early, he could have an immediate impact
